“Medications List.” Acrylic, Fabric, and Sequins on canvas. 16”x20” (2024)
I recently completed a residency in painting at the School of Visual Arts. (Note: I did not get access to the printmaking facilities—be warned.) I was pretty happy with my experience there, and I’m glad that I got to meet so many other artists who were also interested in developing their respective oeuvres. Recently, I’ve been feeling a bit dissatisfied with my art community—I have a lot of great friends and family around me, but I definitely needed a more structured environment to make art in. I also feel that freelancing can be isolating because you aren’t able to show up to the same place everyday to interact with the same colleagues to talk about the same things. Don’t get me wrong—I love my lifestyle—but sometimes I do feel like I need to make an extra effort to find groups of like-minded people. If anyone knows about any philosophy/ art history/ criticism/ fiction reading groups please let me know. I’m also interested in spending more time with nature. I’m beginning to study for my learner’s permit. I want to get my license. I am writing this here to hold myself accountable. (I know that you’re probably reading this Mom.) I think that learning how to drive will open up my world a bit more, and that it will prevent me from closing myself off to residency opportunities in more remote places. I’d also like to drive to places like Bear Mountain, so I can hike. These are just my thoughts. Staying in the city 24/ 7 can be overwhelming, and it is important to touch plants.
Some snippets from the residency
During my time at SVA, I focused on painting and drawing. I painted from life for the first time in a while. (My computer broke—I had to make some drastic decisions.) And I also made a bunch of baby illustrations and paintings, which made it easier to work from my iPad and iPhone. (Note: Apple cost me an arm and a leg to get my computer repaired. Bust the trusts.)
(Also, note: These are only half-finished.)
