Art News
Thank you to everyone who came to the opening of "Familiar-Faces!" This exhibition will be on view at Black Brick Project, a new gallery located at 15 N Oxford in Brooklyn, NY 11205. This group show also includes incredible work by Willa Wasserman, Monica Hernandez, Aldo Decaniz, Helga Hansen, Joshua Nazario, Tanda Francis, Adrian E. Rivera, and Jess Owens-Young. I’m very grateful to Diego Anaya for including us in this show, which will run from March 1-31. Please visit the space if you can!
😊😊😊Take a look at some photos from the opening 😊😊😊

I’m also including some images of my pieces in the show:
“Third Eye.” Graphite, acrylic, micron pen & marker on paper. 9”x12”
A photo of me working on “Social Mobility?” You can find a larger picture of this piece above.
“Essex Market.” Graphite, Acrylic & Marker on paper. 9”x12” (2022)
You may notice a lot of foliage in these recent pieces. I don’t think that I mentioned this in the newsletter before, but I’ve been changing the direction of my work. I’ve always included flowers and natural materials in my art, and now I really want to bring these elements to the forefront of my practice. Recently, I’ve been feeling a lot better—both mentally and physically—after a long period of grief. I don’t know if these feelings ever truly subside, but I’ve been putting a lot of effort into healing and have found that natural remedies have been good for me. My new reorientation has also helped me to appreciate balance—I think that hard work can be good, but not to the point where you destroy your body. I think that rest is also good, but not until you become idle. Right now, I’m seeking to define what’s right for me, which may not be right for everyone. Taking care of my plants has also been good because they remind me to take care of myself.
I also feel that discussions about spirituality have captured the zeitgeist, but I want to place these conversations about plants and ritual objects alongside broader meditations concerning philosophy, ecology, history, and education. I want to make healing objects. I teach a lot of science and math in my day job, so it also makes sense for me to make work about plants, books, and other objects that I cherish 🌴🦋🌿🌱🍀🪴
In other news, I still have pieces available the online platform Auc Art 🎨👩🏾🎨 I’m so glad to be working with them: I feel like they do a lot to help support emerging artists, and I appreciate that they asked me to become a part of their community. Last year, I did an interview with the platform about my practice, and you can read that here. You can also purchase my work through the website here.
Writing News
I’m back to writing again! Last month, I published a review of Fern O’Carolan’s solo show You’ll Never Get to Heaven in Curatorial Affairs. The exhibition—which took place in Chinatown’s No Gallery from December 10, 2022, through January 15, 2023—featured six sculptures harkening back to the artist’s upbringing in Dublin’s Northside and her education at a public single-sex Catholic school. Jacob Barnes did a great job editing the article, and I’m happy with how it came out. Please take a look at that piece here.
That’s all for now! Thanks for reading this, and I hope to see you again next month 🧿💕🧿
